NIIGATA is a nut brushed stained finish applied over charred Nordic Spruce — warm, earthy brown charred timber cladding that delivers a rich, natural tone with the durability benefits of the Shou Sugi Ban charring process. The boards are charred to create a modified carbon surface, wire-brushed to refine the texture and remove loose carbon, then finished with a warm nut stain. Nordic Spruce provides a consistent, even-grained base that takes the nut stain uniformly across the board run — giving NIIGATA a reliable, controlled warmth that is particularly valued on larger elevations where colour consistency across many boards is a specification requirement.
NIIGATA is the Nordic Spruce equivalent of our Siberian Larch NIKKO finish. Both deliver a warm nut brown tone over a charred and brushed surface, and both are produced using the same Shou Sugi Ban charring technique. The difference lies in the base species and what it contributes to the finished character. Siberian Larch has more pronounced grain, natural resin content, and density variation — qualities that show through the nut stain as individual board character and tonal depth. Nordic Spruce has a more even, consistent grain — qualities that translate into a more uniform colour across the full board run. The choice between them is straightforward: NIKKO for premium material character, NIIGATA for maximum colour consistency.
The association between the Shou Sugi Ban technique and black exterior cladding is well established in UK architecture, but it represents only a fraction of what the charring process can deliver. Charred wood cladding in warm tones — nut brown, larch tone, and sand beige — is increasingly specified on projects where the durability and surface quality of the charred system are valued but a black exterior is either inappropriate for the context or simply not what the client wants. NIIGATA answers this demand directly: the performance of charred and stained exterior cladding, in a colour that opens rather than dominates.
The nut brown tone is a particularly versatile choice in the UK architectural palette. It is warm enough to feel natural and domestic, earthy enough to work in rural and semi-rural settings, and restrained enough not to compete with stone, brick, or render on the same elevation. It is the kind of colour that planning officers respond to positively in rural and heritage-sensitive settings where a black exterior would require justification.
Like all charred timber cladding in the range, NIIGATA benefits from the surface modification that the Shou Sugi Ban process delivers. The charred Nordic Spruce surface absorbs less moisture than untreated softwood, weathers more slowly, and provides a better base for stain adhesion and longevity. The nut stain is UV-stable and applied to a surface that has been specifically prepared to receive it — giving better long-term colour retention than the same stain applied to raw planed softwood. Maintenance is low: periodic reapplication of a compatible exterior stain will maintain the original nut tone. No preservative treatment is required on the underlying timber.
NIIGATA is available across the full range of cladding profiles in 20mm and 21mm thickness, widths of 90mm, 120mm, and 140mm, and lengths from 2000mm to 6000mm. Profiles include Batten PAR, Half Lap, Shadow Gap, Shadow Gap V Joint, Tongue and Groove V Joint, Tongue and Groove V Joint Extra, Tongue and Groove V Joint Secret Fix, Rainscreen, and Rainscreen TIGA. Install as part of a ventilated rainscreen façade system with minimum 25mm clear cavity, breathable membrane, and minimum 150mm ground clearance. Use stainless steel fixings throughout. Seal all cut ends before installation. Where reaction-to-fire performance is required, NIIGATA can be supplied with fire-retardant treatment.
