OSAKA is a larch tone brushed stained finish applied over charred Nordic Spruce — a warm honey-brown exterior cladding that references the natural appearance of Siberian Larch, produced using the Shou Sugi Ban charring technique on a Nordic Spruce base. The boards are charred to modify the surface, wire-brushed to refine the texture, then finished with a larch tone stain that delivers the warm, golden-brown character of natural larch with the durability and colour consistency benefits of a properly prepared charred and stained system.
OSAKA exists because one of the most common briefs in UK architecture is "natural larch cladding tone, but consistent and low maintenance." Natural Siberian Larch cladding is a beautiful material — warm, rich, and characterful — but it presents a persistent challenge in practice: it weathers unevenly. Some boards silver quickly, others hold their honey-brown colour for longer; the result after two or three UK winters is an elevation with visible tonal variation that no amount of oiling entirely eliminates. OSAKA addresses this directly by providing the larch tone on a surface that has been specifically prepared to receive it uniformly — the charred and brushed spruce base takes the stain consistently across every board in the run, producing a reliable, even warmth from day one that natural larch cannot guarantee.
Beyond colour consistency, the charred base of OSAKA provides meaningful performance benefits over untreated softwood. The Shou Sugi Ban charring process reduces the moisture absorption of the Nordic Spruce surface at a cellular level — the carbonised layer is significantly less hygroscopic than untreated wood, meaning the boards absorb less water during UK rain events and dry more quickly between them. This reduces the wet-dry cycling that causes surface checking and grain-raising on untreated cladding over time, and extends the effective maintenance interval of the stain significantly compared to the same stain applied to untreated spruce.
The wire-brushing step also improves stain adhesion. By removing the loose carbon layer and exposing the harder grain structure beneath, the brush prepares a surface that takes the larch tone stain more evenly and holds it more durably than an unbrushed charred surface or raw planed timber. The result is a charred timber cladding system where the warm larch tone appearance genuinely lasts longer and requires less maintenance than the natural timber alternative it references.
The larch tone of OSAKA is one of the most architecturally versatile exterior colours in the range. It works alongside timber windows and doors — oak, larch, and softwood painted finishes — without competing. It sits naturally against natural stone — limestone, sandstone, York stone — and warm brick. It complements lime render and earth-toned through-colour render systems. It works with Corten steel details, weathered zinc, and copper as the building ages. And unlike the black finishes in the range, it reads as warm and domestic rather than dramatic and urban — appropriate for the widest range of UK residential and commercial settings.
OSAKA is particularly well suited to barn conversions and agricultural conversions where the brief often includes a reference to the agricultural palette — warm timber, stone, corrugated metal — but with a quality of finish that signals the building's new use clearly. It is also increasingly specified on contemporary new build houses in rural and semi-rural settings where planning requirements call for natural materials and sympathetic colours but the client wants the performance of a modern cladding system rather than the maintenance demands of untreated natural timber.

Install as part of a ventilated rainscreen façade system with minimum 25mm clear cavity, breathable membrane, and minimum 150mm ground clearance. Use stainless steel fixings throughout. Seal all cut ends with a compatible exterior end-grain sealer before installation. Where reaction-to-fire performance is required, OSAKA can be supplied with fire-retardant treatment.
