SAPPORO is a sand beige brushed stained finish applied over charred Nordic Spruce — a warm, neutral exterior cladding from our charred timber cladding range. The boards are charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique to create a modified surface layer, wire-brushed to refine the texture and prepare the surface for the stain, then finished with a UV-stable sand beige stain. The result sits in a distinctive space between a raw natural timber finish and a painted surface — the subtle texture and depth of the brushed char are visible beneath the stain, giving the cladding a material quality that flat painted boards cannot achieve, in a tone that works with the widest possible range of UK architectural contexts.

SAPPORO was developed specifically for the significant number of UK projects where the Shou Sugi Ban charring technique is valued for its durability, sustainability, and surface character — but where a black exterior is either not appropriate for the design context, not acceptable to a planning authority, or simply not what the client wants. Performance Benefits of the Charred Base

Despite the non-black finish, SAPPORO delivers exactly the same surface performance benefits as the black charred finishes in the range. The Nordic Spruce boards are genuinely charred — the process modifies the surface at a cellular level, reducing moisture absorption, improving resistance to surface weathering, and creating a prepared surface that takes the sand beige stain more consistently and durably than untreated or surface-treated softwood. The charred base is also more dimensionally stable at the surface than untreated spruce, reducing the surface checking and grain-raising that affects unmodified softwood over time in external conditions.

The sand beige stain is UV-stable and applied to the wire-brushed charred surface consistently across the board run. Unlike painted coatings on untreated softwood that sit as a film on the surface and delaminate as moisture cycles through the board, the stain on a charred and brushed surface penetrates into a modified substrate — giving better adhesion, longer colour retention, and a lower maintenance burden over the life of the building.

Installation Guidelines

Install as part of a ventilated rainscreen façade system with minimum 25mm clear cavity, breathable membrane, and minimum 150mm ground clearance. Use stainless steel fixings throughout. Seal all cut ends before installation with a compatible exterior end-grain sealer. Maintain correct detailing at junctions, reveals, and sills. Where reaction-to-fire performance is required, SAPPORO can be supplied with fire-retardant treatment.
